Being cast as the understudy for Graffiti Pete (and the ensemble) in In the Heights was a spectacular surprise for my sophomore spring! Since this was only the second musical I have performed, I was not expecting to be handed such a big responsibility. Working with Luis Salgado was so much fun, and learning about the cultures represented in the show from both him and my fellow cast members broadened my worldview immensely. I also got to learn salsa!
The challenges of learning to understudy by being thrown straight in were difficult, but I'm proud of how well I learned both my ensemble track and Graffiti Pete's track and was able to switch between the two easily by the end of the 6-week process. I loved this show with all my heart, and I had the best cast and crew there to put it on with me. I hope for a chance to work with Luis again in the future. Wepa!
